Medicaid Oral Health Policy Academy for Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities


Ohio is one of six states participating in a policy initiative with Medicaid|Medicare|CHIP Services Dental Association (MSDA) aimed at increasing access to dental/oral healthcare services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Oral Health Ohio is leading this initiative in Ohio.



The purpose of this initiative is to identify a policy pathway to:

  1. Increase knowledge and understanding of issues affecting adult Medicaid I/DD beneficiaries

  2. Demonstrate how states may expand infrastructure and capacity to provide dental benefits to adults with I/DD

Anticipated outcomes include:

  1. Increase number of dental providers treating adults with I/DD

  2. Increase access to dental care

  3. Increased utilization of dental care

  4. Improved oral health among I/DD Medicaid enrolled adults
